Personal Injury Q&A

How is a personal injury different from a wear-and-tear injury?

Personal injury and wear-and-tear injuries both present similar symptoms, but they aren’t the same thing:

Personal injury

These injuries occur because of someone else’s negligence or failure to act. Examples include car accidents, work injuries, and slip and fall injuries.

Wear-and-tear injury

Also known as repetitive strain injuries (RSI), wear-and-tear injuries happen because of daily activities, like walking or using hand tools. Osteoarthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome are examples.

When should I see a chiropractor about a personal injury?

Make an appointment at The Family Wellness Center if you suffer a personal injury while working, driving, or doing other daily activities. It’s very important to get checked out, even if your symptoms are mild since they can become much worse silently over time.

How does a chiropractor treat a personal injury?

The Family Wellness Center team treats personal injuries using noninvasive, integrative therapies. Rather than simply trying to mask symptoms, your provider addresses pain at the source to encourage healing and recovery. They might suggest:

  • Exercise guidance
  •
  • Traction therapy
  •
  • Heat or cold therapy
  • Nutritional diet and supplementation
  • Gentle energetic chiropractic (Network Spinal Analysis™)

Most people benefit from two or more of these treatments. That’s because they work together to complement recovery and healing.

The Family Wellness Center team monitors your progress at regular checkups, making adjustments to your care plan as needed.

How long will I need chiropractic care if I have a personal injury?

The amount of time you need to undergo chiropractic care for a personal injury depends on various factors, including the location and severity of your injuries and symptoms.

The Family Wellness Center team usually recommends a series of appointments during the first few weeks.

Mild injuries often improve within a month, but more severe injuries may take longer.* To ensure optimal results, attend each of your treatments, follow your provider’s instructions at home, and be careful not to overdo it.

Rushing back into activity too quickly can exacerbate your injury and delay your progress.

Can a personal injury be prevented?

There’s no way to prevent personal injuries altogether, but there are things you can do to reduce the risk. The Family Wellness Center team recommends always wearing your seatbelt, using the recommended safety equipment at work, paying close attention to your surroundings, and improving your flexibility, responsiveness and adaptability.
